Size: 24-1/4 inches X 38-1/2 inches

Map Type: Atlas

This is a superior copy, with vivid color and strong engraving.

This map was taken from Atlas nouveau contenant toutes les parties du monde ... and is based on Sanson's second map of Africa from 1668. It has a very large and decorative title cartouche which includes a tumult of figures, cornucopias, elephant, crocodile, lion and ostrich under the coat of arms of the Dauphin. Two sheets joined, as issued.

By the late 17th century, the northern coast of the African continent from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Canary Islands had been accurately mapped while the interior was usually shown as a mix of deserts, mountain ranges and mythical rivers. updated to show the Zambeze Rivers above the Zambere and Rio de Spiritu Santo rivers, all of which flow into the Indian Ocean. A large section of South America is shown on the lower left.

This is one of the largest maps of Africa from the 17th century that is available.
