An engraved map with outline color and a color washed cartouche

Size: 19 inches X 22-1/2 inches

Map Type: Loose

This is an excellent copy.

When published in 1680, this map of Africa became the standard for subsequent maps of the continent. It was based on an earlier work by Frederick De Wit and at the time of it's creation, much of Africa had been explored. Yet, the head of the Nile at Lake Victoria had not been discovered and the map is full of fictional details. The colorful cartouche includes Moorish traders, Black Africans, a child riding a large elephant and two lions reclining on the title block. A number of animal vignettes within the map.
