The Grand Duchy of Tuscany was a central Italian monarchy that existed despite a few interruptions, from 1569 to 1859.The It's capital was Florence. This map was created just before the ascension of Leopold II to the seat of the duchy and based on it's detail and attention to accuracy with precise lettering, may have been created to illustrate the entirety of the kingdom of Tuscany for Leopold II. A key to the political and governance annotations on the map is included in the lower left along with a scale in Italian miles. Each province is outlined with a different color and a light colored wash.

The map shows the region of Tuscany from the city of Faenza in the north and the city of Pontremoli in the northeast to Monte Argentario in the southwest. The map is heavily illustrated with mountains, hills, rivers, creeks and tributaries, villages, towns, and cities. The largest city illustrated is Frenze, now referred to as Florence, the capital of Tuscany.
