This is a superior copy, with strong engraving and vivid colors.

This landmark map of the world was the first to appear in a standard atlas. The oval projection was derived from earlier maps and its cartographic information came from the world map of Gerard Mercator created in 1569.

The inaccurate measurements of longitudes and magnetic variations present in 16th century cartography gave many maps of this period inaccurate forms. As a general rule, European cartographers remained uncertain regarding the relationship between Asia and North America.

Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was the "Father of Modern Cartography". He was the first to develop a compendium of maps to form a modern atlas. This is his map of Poitou, France taken from the famous and very popular atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or
