This is a clean, superior copy with vivid color. Beautifully framed in an 1 inch antique gold wood frame, outside dimensions are 21 3/4 inches X 24 3/4 inches.

This a rare map from the single volume first issue of Colton's Atlas of the World, Illustrating Physical and Political Geography published in 1855. This is the first map of Texas ever published by the prolific publisher.

Additional frontier forts noted in this map includes the westernmost fort, Fort Leaton. The location of the historical San Saba Mission also appears.

Colton rebuked Arrowsmith's comment about the Llano Estacado by placing this statement on his map at the bottom of the Texas panhandle; "From the head waters of the Red, Brazos and Colorado Rivers to the Rio Pecos is a desolate and sterile plain...without water or timber and with a scanty vegetation".
