An engraved map, with hand colored wash

Size: 22 inches X 26 inches

Map Type: Pocket

This is a superior copy, strong engraving with vivid colors.

Vignette illustration of “Maidens Rock — Lake Pepin on the Mississippi”. Very decorative border. This beautiful map of the north-central United States shows much of the north western portion of today's Wisconsin and Iowa still undeveloped. Many Indian tribes are named as well as cities. Roads and railroads are also illustrated. Dated 1855.

The map is folded into a 112 page book dated 1856 entitled "Colton's Traveler and Tourist's Guide-Book Through the Western States and Territories containing Brief Descriptions of Each, with the Routes and Distances on the Great Lines of Travel". 99 pp. In the back of this book can be found an extensive list of the map and guide products of the Colton firm. The guide is slightly chipped at the corners and very chipped at the top of the spine.
