Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was the "Father of Modern Cartography". He was the first to develop a compendium of maps to form a modern atlas. This map was taken from the famous and very popular atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or ÔÇťAtlas of the Whole World" which was produced for over 40 years.

This is a very attractive map of France with two cartouches including an elaborate title cartouche and two nicely drawn sailing ships. The map is beautifully detailed showing important cities and towns, lakes, rivers, oceans, forests and mountains.

Taken from Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first complete set of of birds eye "town views" assembled into a 6 volume atlas.
