Volume III Plate 13 - The Seated Colossi of Ramesses II ~ At the time the Temple of Luxor was surveyed by the French savants, the colossal statues of Ramesses II were buried up to their shoulders in sand, the debris of a city tell, making their examination extremely difficult. Their renderings reflect the excavation efforts that were required to enough depth to locate the base of the statue. Each of the forty-five foot tall effigies of Ramesses II were cut from a single block of red and black granite.
